Winsome Maureen
Brown
d. Oct 2, 2024
Winsome Maureen Brown was born on October 30, 1964 in Kingston, Jamaica. She was the youngest of five children in her family.
In March of 1970, Winsome emigrated to Greenwich, Connecticut, where she resided with her parents, Neville and Mavis Brown, and her siblings Lorna, Oliver and Sharon Brown, all of whom pre-deceased her, leaving only her eldest sister, Patricia Pennant.
She attended elementary and middle schools in Greenwich and graduated from Norwalk High School, in 1983. After high school, she worked at a local pharmacy in New Canaan, Connecticut as a sales clerk. Over time, however, due to mental challenges and physical illnesses, Winsome was not able to hold a job and became a ward of the State of Connecticut. As her cousin Yvonne remembers, Winsome was fiercely independent, entrepreneurial, and was always searching out new and innovative ideas to earn a living. Her family, particularly her mother, was ever so thankful for our Lord's lovingkindness and tender mercies toward Winsome, in how He always took special care of her, providing for all her needs. He kept her in His care.
Despite all of life's challenges, Winsome was always a very friendly and cheerful person. In addition, she definitely had the gift of gab, as they say. She loved people and could happily strike up a conversation with anyone—even total strangers. People loved her, and she made fast friends. Her cousin Stacey-Ann remembers her bright, beautiful smile, easy laughter and lovely voice. Cousin Yvonne remembers how loving, caring and kindhearted she was.
Winsome accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior as a teenager, while living on Long Island in the late seventies. We're confident of her decision. Romans 10:9 says, "...if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (NKJV) As a young Christian, she loved the Lord, read His Word and testified of His grace at every opportunity.
Even her vibrant testimony for the Lord Jesus suffered from the effects of her mental illness, as Winsome later drifted into other religious ideologies. But God…who is rich in mercy and full of compassion, who had by His grace through the gift of faith saved Winsome, remained faithful to her, and our family gives Him praise that she is now in His presence (II Corinthians 5:8). We know that the Lord is good and His mercy endures forever (Psalm 136:1). His love is steadfast and eternal. He saves and never forsakes. And we trust that, "For as many as the promises of God are, in Him they are yes; therefore through Him also is our Amen to the glory of God through us." (II Corinthians 1:20 NASB).
Winsome is survived by her eldest sister, Patricia Pennant, her uncles, Dr. Joseph Wint, Harold Wint and Herbert Wint, and a host of loving cousins and dear friends, who will miss her.
