Steven Ronald
James
Apr 8, 1954 — Jul 23, 2025
Steven Ronald James died unexpectedly on July 23, 2025. He is predeceased by his father the Rev. Ronald James. Of his early years, he said he learned more listening to his father preach one hour a week than he did in all his time at high school. He is survived by his devoted mother Lois, his loving wife Burdette, his sons, Adam, Daniel and Joshua, as well as his grandchildren Cayleb and Sage. His siblings Kristin Able, Jennifer Bridge and David James were a constant in his life and even though they lived far away he treasured the times they were together.
Steven was born in Liberty, NY. He graduated high school in 3 years and then attended Juniata College where his emphasis was philosophy, literature and pottery. His baccalaureate secured, Steven followed in the footsteps of many young writers and philosophers; he worked in restaurant kitchens where he met the love of his life-Burd. Steven owned a catering business in Norwalk, CT until he had a prophetic dream that changed the course of his life. The business was sold and he enrolled at the University of Bridgeport and received a masters in Education. Bridgeport Public Schools jumped on the chance to hire him before he had even graduated. He taught English for 15 years at Bassick High School. That job gave him so much joy—it was all about the students for him and all about the love he could show them. He retired in 2021.
Throughout the years Steven was happy to share time and talents with others. He was a Scoutmaster, a Sunday School teacher, a cook at community meals, a leader on mission trips, and held a variety of leadership positions in his church. He was a humble seeker, practiced musician, carpenter, outdoorsman, and an avid golfer. Not only a philosopher and teacher Steven was also blessed with the curiosity and intelligence to fix almost anything. He renovated his home room by room with the help of a good friend "who knew what he was doing." Steven built his own set of golf clubs, fixed cars, made repairs at his church, and set up a Linux system for his home computer network. Talking with people, sharing thoughts, and laughing at any silliness were his joys. He will be terribly missed by family and friends who always felt his love.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on August 2 at 1:30 at the Stratford United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers you could honor him by donating to the Stratford United Methodist Church--Appalachia Service Project, 2600 Main Street, Stratford CT 06614.
