Stanley George Kost, age 96, of Shelton, previously of Stratford, passed away on May 17 th , 2021 with his family close by. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Christian L. Kost and Pauline French Kost and was predeceased by his brother Kenneth. He was a proud member of the Bassick High School class of 1942 and enlisted in the Navy three weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. Stanley served 43 years in Naval Service which included nine years active duty and 34 years active reserves. After enlisting he went to boot camp in Newport, RI after which he was assigned to a WWI four stack destroyer, the USS Bernadou, DD-153 screening convoys to Iceland. He participated in the offloading of Army Rangers in Safi French Morocco in 1942 as well as landings in Sicily and Salerno Italy. As the war progressed he was sent to Portsmouth, England to prepare for D-Day and was positioned off Omaha Beach June 6 th 1944. He spent time at Pearl Harbor as well as Okinawa.
After leaving active duty, Stanley spent 40 years at Sikorsky Aircraft as a manager of procurement, audit and surveillance. He was an active member of his church, The First Congregational Church of Stratford, as a Trustee, Deacon and Usher. He was a life long member of both the VFW and American Legion, a 32 o Mason and had recently joined the Moose Club.
Stanley was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Nydia Warner Kost and is survived by daughter Claudia Kost Carey and her husband Robert, son Christopher Kost, daughter Martha Kost Gibbons, beloved grandchildren Rob Carey and Kayla Gibbons and several nieces and nephews.
