Obituary

Roger J. Curran, 80, a long time resident of Lordship (Stratford, CT), died peacefully on May 5th in South Florida with his children, Patrick and Janet, by his side. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Arch Curran and Olivia Pohl Curran. His sister, Joyce Tucker, and brother, Bruce Curran, preceded him in death. Roger's wife, Mary Ellen Curran, died in 1979 following a tragic car accident. Roger excelled in scholastics, graduating in 1952 with top honors from St. Xavier High School. With a scholarship and fellowship at the Speed Scientific School, University of Louisville, he earned his BS and MS in Chemical Engineering by 1958 followed by doctoral studies at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He then went on to a very successful career with GE, Remington Arms, and Smith & Wesson, where he ultimately retired as Director of Research and Development. Indicative of his intelligent and ever inquisitive mind, he secured numerous US and International Patents in various fields over the course of his employment. As well as designing and developing a wide-range of novel prototypes and inventions (such as his personal two-seater helicopter with matching all aluminum custom trailer), Roger also enjoyed: photography, archery, hunting, fishing, skeet and trap shooting (CT State Champion),and tennis. He was a very loving and charitable gentleman who enjoyed sharing his ideas and time with everyone he met. Roger is survived by his son Patrick and wife, Maureen, and granddaughter, Sasha of Pompano Beach, Florida; his daughter Janet and husband, Jim, and grandchildren, Justin and Jordan of Reston, Virginia; Mary Ellen's brother Chuck and his wife, Jackie Gately and extended family in Massachusetts; his brother-in-law, Joseph Tucker, his sister-in-law, Joan Curran; many cousins, nieces and nephews in and around Louisville, and cherished friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 15, 2015 at 11:00 am directly at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Lordship. Interment will follow in the Union Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet the family on Sunday, June 14, 2015 from 4 to 8 pm at the Dennis & D'Arcy - Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford. Roger suffered in his later years with a neurodegenerative disease known as LBD (Lewy Body Dementia), for which there is no cure. To learn more please visit (www.lbda.org).
