Robert Thomas Switzgable, 96, of Stratford and Orleans, MA died peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2025. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Sue Switzgable. He was born on October 30, 1928, the son of the late Carl and Mildred Switzgable of Stratford.
Bob was a lifelong resident of Stratford. He attended Stratford High School, where he was Captain of the tennis team.
He graduated from Wesleyan University, where he was a proud member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
After college, Bob took a position at People's Savings Bank before transitioning to the insurance industry where he became the President of the Randolph-Switzgable Agency in Bridgeport. He was also a past President of the Bridgeport Association of Independent Insurance Agents and a member of the Board of Trustees at the Mechanics and Farmers Savings Bank.
He was an active member of the Stratford community through his roles as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Sterling House Community Center and Board of Directors for the Stratford Visiting Nurse Association. He was dedicated to the First Congregational Church, acting as Chairman of the Church Council, and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was a leader in the Church Youth Group for twenty-one years. Bob, also, volunteered for Boy Scout Troop 71 of Stratford for fifteen years.
Bob was an avid fan of the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, friends and family in Orleans, MA. He was a member of the
Orleans Coffee Club, and the Orleans Historical Society and enjoyed attending many Cape Cod Baseball League games.
Bob and Sue shared their love of travel with their sons by exploring the Continental US and camping in Maine every summer. Later in life, they visited Alaska on several occasions to watch the Iditarod.
Grandma and Grandpa were dedicated to their five grandchildren and loved spending time with them playing games, going to the beach, or finding a new adventure.
He is survived by his two children and their families: Thomas and Mary-Beth Switzgable of Trumbull and their children, Thomas and Megan Switzgable. Robert and Ann Switzgable of New Hartford and their children Benjamin and his wife Allyson, Wesley, and Samuel Switzgable.
Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday Feb. 18, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Dennis & D'Arcy - Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main St. Stratford. Services and burial will be private.
