Robert Bassford Porter, age 95 of Stratford passed away peacefully on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was the devoted husband of 63 years to Shirley Wilkinson Porter. Born in Bridgeport he was a son of the late Henry and Eleanor Bassford Porter. He served in the US Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne during WWII. Robert was a 48 year employee of Sikorsky Aircraft as a tool maker and had a life-long interest in aviation, was a member of various clubs and organizations, as well as lending his aid in restoring the Excambrian for display at the New England Air Museum. Robert will be remembered as a generous, devoted and loving person. In addition to his loving wife, survivors include his son, James Porter and his wife Eileen of Stratford; a daughter, Nancy McDonough and husband Fred and their children, Amanda and Joshua of Goshen, NH, his cousin, Elaine Haggstrom of Trumbull and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Jack and sister Eleanor Bonner. Graveside services will take place in the Spring at the Union Cemetery, Stratford.
