Robert (Bob) P Matteson age 93 of Stratford peacefully went to be with the Lord on Monday August 15, 2016. He was the devoted husband of 61 years to Barbara Gauchet Matteson. Born in Providence Rhode Island on July 18, 1923, to the late Adelbert & Grace (Potter) Matteson. He served aboard the USS Wasp Aircraft Carrier during WWII as an Aviation Machinist from 1943 – 1946 stationed in the Pacific.
Robert was employed at Avco Lycoming for 32 years as a lab technician until his retirement.
An avid golfer who enjoyed playing with family and friends, he also played in a Duck Pin Bowling league. His other interests included watching the Men's and Women's UCONN basketball games, and he was a dedicated Yankee fan.
A longtime member of Stratford Baptist Church Bob, faithfully serving as a Sunday School teacher and Youth Director for many years, devoting each weekend to providing fun and spiritual activities. He also served as: Deacon, Usher, Trustee, and on the Board of Christian Education.
Bob was always available to provide transportation to and from church services and various appointments. He was also known to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors while engaging in friendly conversation with a sunny disposition. He always saw the best in everyone.
Wherever Bob travelled he would meet someone he knew, or make a new friend. He was an amazing husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.
A writer of poems, a peace maker, with a wonderful sense of humor he will be greatly missed and remembered by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife: Barbara, son David Matteson and wife Mary (Furman) of South China, Maine, Daughter Susan Connorton and husband Peter of Woodbridge, CT. Grandsons, Evan and Tanner Matteson, A sister Ruth Dalby, of Canyon Lake California and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Irma Loring and Anita Otis, Brothers Adelbert, Earl and William Matteson.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, August 19, 2016 meeting directly at 10:30 am at Stratford Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Adkins officiating. Graveside services will follow meeting at 2:30 pm at the Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme, CT. Friends may greet the family on Thursday, August 18, 2016 from 5 to 7 pm at the Dennis & D'Arcy – Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford.
