Paul Leon Lovington, age 92, husband of the late Leona Lee Binkley Lovington, passed away following a brief illness on Saturday February 28, 2015 at Lord Chamberlain surrounded by his loving family. Born in Elizabeth, NJ on December 26, 1922, he was the son of the late Leon and Mercedes Lovington. Paul was an Army Air Corps Veteran who piloted B-17 bombers during WWII. He graduated from N.C State University following his military service. Paul was an Aerospace Engineer for the former Avco Lycoming for 30 years before retiring in 1987 and considered it an honor to have worked alongside some of the world's most notable turbine engine pioneers. Prior to joining Lycoming in 1956, Paul worked as an Engineer at the former Aeroproducts Division of General Motors of Dayton, Ohio, in the propeller blade design branch. He was a lifelong member and former northeastern region president of the American Helicopter Society.
Throughout his adult life Paul enjoyed playing and watching golf and completed the 2014 golf season alongside his dedicated golfing buddies. In retirement, Paul was instrumental in keeping the Lycoming Golf League active and viable to the present day. Paul took great pride in coordinating the annual Lycoming Golf League Outing, an event that was enjoyed by countless participants over many years. He was also active in the Avco Lycoming Ski Club well into his 70's. Paul enjoyed taking summertime trips to Lake Sunapee New Hampshire to spend time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Along with his loving wife, Paul was also a loyal fan of the UCONN men's and women's basketball teams.
Survivors are two devoted sons, Mark P. Lovington of Bolton, MA, and Wayne M. Lovington and his wife Karen of Guilford, five loving grandchildren, Jeffrey M., Timothy J., Scott R., Julianna E. and Aimee L. Lovington. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Becky Binkley, Bonnie Chima, Lisa Hollis, Matthew Binkley and Darin Binkley, and many longtime friends and devoted neighbors, whose loving care allowed him to live an independent lifestyle. Friends are invited to attended Graveside Service with Full Military Honors on Saturday May 9, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery, 469 Howe Ave ( River Rd ) Shelton. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the First Congregational Church, 2301 Main St. Stratford with Rev. Ed Rawls, officiating.
