Mildred Olsen Shaw Woodson, age 94, of Troy, Ohio previously of Stratford, passed away on Wednesday September 18, 2013 at Clare Bridge of Troy, Troy, Ohio. Daughter of the late Martin and Bertha Olsen, she was born, married, raised her family, and lived the majority of her life in Stratford. Mildred was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, H. Francis Shaw (Fran); her second husband Thomas Woodson (Ted); and her brother Arthur Olsen and his wife Ruth Olsen, lifelong residents of Stratford. She was a graduate of the State of Connecticut New Britain Teacher's College and taught at Franklin and Wilcoxson Schools in Stratford. She moved from teaching to become the Regional Sales Manager of World Book Encyclopedia. She was also an Employment Counselor in the CT State Labor Department. Mildred loved traveling and visited over sixty countries. She was active in the Habitat for Humanity in California and in the Methodist and Unity Churches here and in California. Her love of learning never stopped as she pursued art and writing classes in her later years. She found joy in her painting, piano, travel, church and cultural pursuits, and spread this joy through her numerous volunteer activities here and in California. Survivors include her beloved family: two sons; David T. Shaw and his wife Elaine R. Shaw of East Windsor and Ronald N. Shaw and his wife Joyce of Troy, OH; loving grandchildren, Eric Shaw and wife Estelle of Hermosa Beach, CA; Brian Shaw and wife Jennifer of Manhattan; four beloved great-grandchildren, Caterina, Conner, Dagny, and Odin Shaw; niece Barbara Pearson and her husband Sam of Fairfax, VA; and nephew Arthur Olsen and wife Pat of Sunset Beach, North Carolina. Friends and relatives are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Dennis & D'Arcy – Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main St. Stratford. Funeral services will be held on Monday September 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Koonea Lee, Pastor of the Stratford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Lawncroft cemetery, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Habitat for Humanity and the Stratford United Methodist Church.
