Lawrence Francis Griffin, 89, of Milford, passed away peacefully at home on April 1st , 2023 surrounded by loved ones. He was born on May 22, 1933 in New Haven, he was the son of the late Edward and Katherine Griffin. Larry was a lifelong resident of Milford and graduated from Milford High School in 1951.
Larry is survived by his daughter and son in law Eileen and Paul Kelly. His two sons Edward and Michael Griffin. And his former wife Elizabeth Murphy . Along with his grandchildren who he loved dearly; Tarah and Maggie Kelly, Monica and Tyler Griffin, Hunter Griffin, and his great grandson Bowen Sullo. As well as his siblings Nancy Pluto and Robert (Rosanne) Griffin, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Edward Griffin and sister Katherine Carberry.
Larry served in the U.S. Navy (1951-1955), then attended Central Connecticut State University, also played football, and graduated in 1961. Upon graduation, he worked at Travelers for 30 years. In the early '90's, he began working at Yale University at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium for 10 years.
During his early life he pursued his avocation, sports officiating. Larry was past president of the New Haven County Football Officials Association and the Connecticut Chapter EIFAO (college football officials). He was honored as an outstanding football official by the New Haven Gridiron Club, inducted into the Connecticut Football Officials Hall of Fame, and was honored as one of the first inductees of the Ring of Honor by the New Haven Football Officials Association in 2020. He officiated nine Connecticut High School Championship games and six NCAA college playoff games. He was also a member of IIABO Board #10 (basketball officials), The Greater New Haven Umpires Association (baseball), and the Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association.
Our family would like to thank the friends and family who stopped by over the years that Paul and Eileen took care of Larry. The laughs and memories got him through the hard days while remembering the best ones.
