Joan Wells Birks, 95, of Stratford, passed away peacefully at home on February 14, 2026. Born January 1, 1931, she spent most of her life in Stratford, growing up on Nichols Avenue and later raising her family in her husband's childhood home along the Housatonic River, where she cherished her neighbors and friendships.

Joan was a gentle, compassionate woman who brought warmth and support to everyone around her. She found her greatest joy in family time. She loved reading, old Hollywood movies, fashion (always dressing elegantly), and in her youth, she was a cheerleader at Stratford High School.

Joan is survived by her sons Kibby Birks (and his sons Justin and Jonathan), James Birks (and his daughters Ingrid Hudon and Lily Birks), and Martin Birks and his wife Rosa; her nephews Mike Oesau and Tim Oesau; her five great-grandchildren; and her best friend Aggie.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Melville Lee Birks (known as Lee) in 2008, her younger sister Constance Oesau in 2015, and her brother-in-law Harold "Mike" Thomas Oesau.

A memorial service for Joan Wells Birks will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at White Oak Baptist Church, 5344 Main Street, Stratford, Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers Joan asked for donations be made to the Stratford, CT Library.
