Obituary

Hester Elizabeth Riggott Baker, of Stratford, April 9, 1918 – February 25, 2014,
Born Hester Elizabeth Riggott in Ballston (now Alexandria) Virginia, Hester loved her family life in Loudon County. Hester grew into a very beautiful and spirited woman, with a reputation for having fun. She graduated from Harding High School and worked at General Electric and the Lacey Manufacturing Company before marrying Edward Baker. While raising their family, Hester was active in Park Street Congregational Church in Bridgeport, including service as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and as a Deaconess. Hester also served for many years as a Girl Scout leader. She later became a vital part of Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, where on Sunday mornings, she was known by the little ones in the nursery as "Granny Hes." During the weeks, she was active in the women's groups and volunteered at the Golden Rooster Shop. Hester is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Hester leaves behind her husband Ed, and children Judy (and Fred) Miller, Janice (and Rick) Jones, and Walter (and Debra) Baker. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren: Jennifer Stephen, Cindy, Michael and Allison Baker, J'aime, Ricky, and Gareth "Indy" Jones, her sister Lillian Wallace, sister-in-law Catherine Riggott and seven great grandchildren. Hester was preceded in death by her parents Mary and Albert Riggott and siblings Frank, George, Jack, and Helen. Hester's children are so grateful for her gift and example of selfless love, and that her sense of humor is hereditary. The family extends special thanks to the staffs of the Bridgeport Hospital Center for Geriatrics, the Stratford VNA, and the Golden Hill Nursing Home for their kindness and care. Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Thursday, February 27, 2014 directly at Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford at 10:30 am with Rev. Scott Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the Park Cemetery, Bridgeport. There will be no prior calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the church of your choice.
