Obituary

Elwood "Woody" Richard Tschopp, 95, took his final breath on January 6th, 2026 after a brief illness. He was born on November 28th, 1930, in Allentown, Pennsylvania to Elsie and Anton Tschopp. Woody attended Lehigh University and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate.

Woody was the loving husband to Barbara and they shared 71 wonderful years of marriage together before her passing in 2024. He met Barbara by chance from the next-door neighbor and the rest is history. The Tschopps moved to Troy, NY when Woody served in the army during the Korean War. They moved a few times in Connecticut from Ansonia to Norwalk and eventually settled in Stratford, Connecticut where they lived for over 40 years.

Woody spent many years with Edwards and Co. in Norwalk, though his genuine love for the road led him to additional roles with Connecticut Limo and a private family company. Outside of work, he could often be found tending to his lawn and garden, tinkering with his boat, or simply finding peace in watching the airplanes and boats pass by. Eventually, Woody settled into a well-deserved retirement in Stratford, where he dedicated his days to his greatest joys: his grandchildren, his family, and his many friends.

An engineer at heart with a sharp, inquisitive mind, Woody never lost his passion for 'tinkering' and remained curious until the very end. Whether he was cheering on a Sunday football game, watching UConn Basketball, the History channel, or admiring the planes, trains, and boats he so loved, he embraced life with enthusiasm. His family fondly credits his impressive 95 years to his and Barbara's long-standing tradition of 'snacks and drinks'—specifically a combination of salty treats, chocolate, and a glass of Dewar's on the rocks.

Woody loved the water and the sunshine, and nothing made him happier than being surrounded by his friends and family. For over 40 years, Woody and Barbara were devoted members of the Stratford United Methodist Church, where they found joy in volunteering and fellowship until returning to Norwalk in 2023 to be closer to family.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Barbara. He is survived by his daughters, Debbie Buckett of Norwalk, and Patty (Richard) Woodroof of Charleston, South Carolina. His legacy continues through his three grandchildren, Jessica Buckett (Brent Morris), Stephen Buckett (Melissa), and Janine Kromer (Jared); he was deeply proud of each of them and loved them very much. He leaves behind two beloved great-grandchildren: Tillie, age 3, and Patrick Buckett, 6 months. They were a constant source of smiles, laughter, and entertainment for him in his final years. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to the dedicated team at Autumn Lake Healthcare for the kindness and specialized care provided to Woody during his final years. Your support meant the world to us.

A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday January 24, 2026, 11:00am at Stratford United Methodist Church in Stratford, CT.
