Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edward Viola, 78, a devoted Navy Vietnam veteran, husband, stepfather, grandfather, and friend. Ed left behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support.

Born to serve, Ed proudly wore his Vietnam Navy hat wherever he went—a symbol of his dedication to his country and a life of honor and integrity. But it wasn't just the Navy hat that defined Ed; his favorite Halle's Hope hat often accompanied him, a testament to his undying love, and his belief in hope, perseverance, and making a difference in the lives of others.

Over 43 years ago, Ed stepped into a role that would define much of his life: becoming a stepfather to Gary and Dan, then just 6 and 3 years old. Ed showed the true meaning of fatherhood through his unwavering respect, support, and love for both boys. He became their steady anchor, always present, always caring, and always their biggest supporter.

Ed had a love for craftsmanship, photography, golf, classic cars, motorcycles, and dogs—each passion reflecting his inquisitive, thoughtful spirit. He spent his later years working at the Trumbull Agriscience School, where he poured his heart into supporting students and fostering a sense of community. And when he wasn't at school, Ed could often be found at the casino—slots were his favorite—or at Dunkin' Donuts, a place where the staff knew and adored him just as much as he loved their coffee.

Ed was a man of many joys, from playing cards by the pool with his wife Kathie, to sharing laughs with his cherished grandchildren. His love for life was as evident as his care for the people around him. Ed had a group of close friends which became his brothers.  They played golf and cards and had countless laughs.  He never missed a chance to ask questions, to learn more about those he loved, and to show how much he truly cared. Thoughtful and kind, Ed touched the lives of everyone he met, leaving a profound impact on his family, friends, and community.

Though we grieve his loss, we celebrate a life well-lived. Ed taught us what it means to show up for the people you love when it matters most, to find joy in life's simple pleasures, and to cherish every moment. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Ed is survived by his beloved wife Kathie, who shared his love for life and unwavering kindness; his devoted step-sons, Gary (Marilee) Root and Dan (Samantha) Root, who he loved and supported as his own; "Poppa" to his cherished grandchildren, Jake, Tyler, and Gracyn, who were constant sources of pride and joy; his sister, Gloria Philips, and several beloved nieces and nephews. Ed is predeceased by his precious granddaughter, Halle Root, whose memory he carried with him always. Additionally, Ed is predeceased by his parents George and Bess Viola, and sister Sara Strickland.

As we say goodbye, we do so with gratitude for the years we had with Ed and for the lessons he taught us about love, loyalty, and living life to the fullest.

Rest in peace, Ed. You will always be loved, missed and forever remembered.
