Obituary

Donald "Don" Robert Millberry, age 94, of Stratford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully in his home late Sunday night, June 4, 2023. Don was born in Peabody, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, March 6, 1929, to the late Lt. Cornell, Harold Kirk Edward Millberry and Alice Millberry (nee. Malcolm Parker). Don shared his childhood with his siblings, Roberta, George, and Carole. Don spent his early years in Eastern Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire since his father's military career took the family throughout New England. Don graduated from Manchester Central High School in June of 1946 and ten days later joined the US Navy at the age of 17. Don spent two years in the Navy as a radio operator and radar man on the USS Wisconsin battleship as well as the USS Damato destroyer. Upon discharge, Don enrolled at Bridgton Academy in Maine, where he played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track. Don's time at Bridgeton prepared him for a bachelor's degree from Bryant University (class of 1952).

While at Bryant University, Don met the love of his life Joan Bardsley Whitney of Ashland, Maine and they eloped to Concord, New Hampshire in 1951. After graduation, Don and Joan relocated to Western Massachusetts where they raised their three children, were avid dancers (especially perfecting swing and square) and played lots of bridge with friends. Don was the proud, loving, and encouraging father of Darice, James, and Kim, always supporting them as they made their way in the world. Most of Don's career was spent maintaining good relations between industrial labor and administration in multiple industries.

In 1980, Don and Joan relocated to Westport, Connecticut where they spent the next two decades enjoying proximity to family, traveling, and time spent with friends. In 1988, Don became a grandfather, never missing a grandparent's day, school concert, graduation, or celebration.

Don was a proud member of various episcopal churches in Massachusetts and Connecticut, serving on multiple committees donating his time and expertise.

Don was predeceased by his wife, Joan, in April of 2009, sharing nearly 58 years of marriage. His sisters Carole (2000) and Roberta (2014), and brother George (1998). He is survived by his children Darice Leslie Herne (Raphael D'Ambruoso), James Kirk Millberry (Cathy Greer Millberry), Kimberlee Whitney Horan (Richard Cacioppo), and granddaughter Sujatha Herne (Sebastian Suchecki).  Don, and his endearing sense of humor, was cherished by many and will be missed by all.
