Charlotte Mae Nedbal, age 81, of Stratford passed away peacefully at home Tuesday December 5, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of William Nedbal Jr.
Charlotte was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 9, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Thomas McElhinney and Helen D. Adams. Charlotte was one of four daughters, and they spent their lifetime as best friends, along with their mother. She conquered polio, Scarlet fever, measles and mumps as a child, and when diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year, she fought that too. Charlotte was a strong woman, and passed that on to her four daughters, of which they are thankful.
Charlotte was a 1955 graduate of Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, Pa, where she met her future husband Bill. She had a successful career at Western Union and later as an optical specialist at US Vision in CT. Bill and Charlotte raised four daughters and moved to Connecticut where she was a devoted mother and homemaker. She was an active member of the Stratford United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and started the preschool program as well. She loved teaching her students, and there are many fond memories of her putting together lessons and crafts at home. Later in life she worked in the cafeteria at Wilcoxson School in Stratford and helped raise her grandchildren. Her interests included gardening, sewing, photography and reading. She grew the same grapevine at each house she lived in from which she made jelly and wreaths that she gifted to many.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William Nedbal Jr., her mother Helen McElhinney, and her sister Dolores McDowell. She is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth McElhinney and Sally Haffner (Otto), her sister-in-law Joy Johnson (Philip), and her four daughters, Janet Boemmels (Richard), Meg Dennis (Mark), Charlotte Siksay (Andy), Susan Morby (Derek). She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, William and Kevin Sober, Alex Siksay, Ryan Dennis, Grace and Jack Morby, and family and friends.
A Funeral Service will take place for Charlotte on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at noon at the Stratford United Methodist Church with Rev. Simeon Law officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Smilow Cancer Care Center, 5520 Park Ave. Trumbull CT 06611, or to the Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, 12 Cambridge Dr. Trumbull CT 06611.
