Barbara Gauchet
Matteson
Nov 1, 1924 — Feb 24, 2024
Barbara G. Matteson age 99 of Woodbridge, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 24, 2024. She was born in West Haven , CT to the late Archibald Greenfield Gauchet and Maude Steele Gauchet. She lived in Stratford most of her life until moving to Woodbridge in 2020. As a child she spent many summers in Old Lyme, CT, where they enjoyed many picnics at Rodgers Lake. She spoke of running down to the railroad tracks when the train was coming in and the conductor would blow the whistle at the kids waiting as it went by. Barbara also had special memories of having tea parties with her grandma Elizabeth. A graduate of Stratford High School class of "43", she was quoted in her yearbook by classmates: "There are many things which never go out of style; A perfect woman is one of them" After graduation she went to work at General Electric in Bridgeport as a clerical worker during World War II. During her time at G.E. she joined the bowling team where she met and made some of her lifelong friends. She left G. E. to care for her parents and became a forever caregiver to many family members. In 1953, she met her future husband on a blind date at a Yale vs Brown football game and later married him in 1955. Barbara was a longtime member of Stratford Baptist Church where she served on many committees. She enjoyed watching the UCONN women's and men basketball, bird watching and listening to a variety of music. She was a sweet and kind woman affectionately known by some as "Mrs M". She touched many lives and will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. She will be forever missed.
She is survived by her son, David Matteson and wife Mary (Furman) of South China, Maine, daughter Susan Connorton and husband Peter of Woodbridge, CT, Grandsons, Evan Matteson and wife (Brianna) of North Hollywood, CA, and Tanner Matteson of South China, Maine. She is predeceased by her husband Robert, brother Donald and her parents.
