Obituary

Alan J. Donaldson, age 89 of Devon previously of Lordship passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1, 2014, peacefully at home in the company of family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 53years Jean Marie Spicer Donaldson. Born in Stratford on July 16, 1925, he was a son of the late Frederick and Nellie Smith Donaldson. Alan was a proud veteran of WWII serving with the US Navy. He was a local business man, after owning and operating a vegetable store in Bridgeport for several years, he relocated to Milford where he expanded his business to include a grocery store, liquor store and ice store, appropriately named, "Donaldson's Market". He owned ice companies called Devon Ice Company in Milford and P. Dania's Ice in New Haven. Mr. Donaldson ran his business until he retired in 2007 at the age of 82. In Milford, Mr. Donaldson was very involved with his community as he served as the head of the Fire Commission. Alan was volunteer Firefighter with Devon Hose Company #4 and was very involved with the Milford Lions Club. He is survived by his loving children; Wayne A. Donaldson and his wife Jody of Lebanon, Gary A. Donaldson of New Haven, Jeffrey S. Donaldson of Milford and Janis Jerome and her husband Scott of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., his sister; Barbara Nichols of Stratford. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Ryan Donaldson, Erin Flakos, Caitlin Donaldson, Henry Donaldson, Jeffery Donaldson Jr., Heather Gladue, Melissa Hayman and Mitchel Jerome, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place on Friday, December 5, 2014 at 10:30 am directly to Lordship Community Church. Interment with full military honors will take place in the Union Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet the family on Thursday Dec. 4, 2014 from 4 to 8 pm at the Dennis & D'Arcy – Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford.
